New pressure group emerges in UDF
A new pressure group called Yellow Movement has emerged in the United Democratic Front (UDF) and has since set August 30 2012 as deadline for the two factions that exist in the party to dissolve.
From August 30, the movement will convene at the party’s headquarters in Limbe to elect an interim committee to run the affairs of the party, according to a statement from the movement dated July 21 2012 and signed by its interim coordinator William Jalani, interim secretary Omar Ndeketa and interim facilitator Charles Tsakala.
The birth of the Yellow Movement comes at a time when the two warring factions in the party led by Friday Jumbe and the secretary general Kennedy Makwangwala have engaged in talks to bring sanity to the party.
But Jalani said the movement still sticks to its August 30 deadline. He said the statement was sent to former president Bakili Muluzi, Makwangwala and Jumbe.
“The Yellow Movement would like to condemn the existence of two factions and asks the factions to immediately dissolve. The UDF cannot be run by a secretary general because the constitution of the party does not give him powers to run the party. In the same vein, the Jumbe faction cannot continue to operate as a faction,” reads the statement.
UDF spokesperson Ken Ndanga condemned the pressure group, describing it as a group of people who want to advance personal egos.
