‘Chitipa has talent’

National Theatre Association of Malawi (Ntam) Northern Region chapter President Sam Sambo says Chitipa has a lot of dramatists with the potential to flourish if nurtured and polished.

Sambo made the remarks after conducting a drama competition and elections of the district committee in an effort to raise drama at grass roots level.

“The district committees are important since they help expose local talent, increase Ntam membership and connect artists. Imagine organisations get artists from Mzuzu or Lilongwe to perform in Chitipa or other rural areas when they can engage local artists who know the language and culture best,” said Sambo on Thursday.

All districts in the North except Nkhata Bay and Likoma now have committees, he said.

According to Sambo, Chitipa has 10 active theatre groups. During the competition, Motomoto Performing Arts emerged winners and walked away with K10 000 (about $60).

On the second position were Aluta Performing Arts and Chikondi Drama Group. In the individual prizes, Lesket Sikwese and Esnart Simkonda scooped best actor and actress awards, respectively.

The competition, staged at Kawale Teachers Development Centre on Monday, was graced by Ntam president Ian Chisekula.

John Mulenga was elected chair of the just-established district committee.
