Accident claims one in Nkhata Bay

A six-year-old boy died in a road accident that at Liuzi along Dwangwa-Chintheche Road in Nkhata Bay on May 6.

Nkhata Bay Police Station spokesperson Ignatius Esau said on the material day at around 1pm, Nandi Chiweta was driving from Mzuzu to Blantyre with two passengers on board.

“As the driver passed through Liuzi, the young boy dashed on to the road from the driver’s left side. Sensing danger, the driver swerved his vehicle to the right to avoid hitting the boy, but he ended up hitting him,” said Esau.

The boy died on the spot and a post-mortem conducted at Liuzi Heath Centre revealed that death was due to head injuries.

The driver, who is currently on police bail, will appear in court on May 12 2016 to answer a charge of causing death by reckless driving, which is contrary to Section 126 of the Road Traffic Act.

The deceased came from Chimwela Village, Traditional Authority Zilakoma in Nkhata Bay District.
