Alliance for Democracy (Aford) has unveiled its candidate for Chibanja Ward in Mzuzu City, where a People’s Party (PP) councillor was killed last year.

The ward has not had a councillor for 10 months, a situation some residents have said is affecting development as people are not able to relay their problems to the council for redress.

The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) is expected to hold by- elections on August 25 2015 in the ward and other wards countrywide, which are vacant.

The Aford candidate, Gibson Chisale, was unveiled by the party’s president, Enoch Chihana, on Sunday at Chibanja Primary School ground.

Chihana appealed to the community to embrace Chisale, who he described as a hardworking young man. He said Chisale was already attending Mzuzu Council meetings as youth representative and he has insight in handling development issues.

Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) regional governor Kenneth Sanga said the party will soon introduce its candidate, George Manda, who contested in the last elections. Sanga said the candidate went unopposed during the party’s primary elections.

Malawi Congress Party (MCP) regional chairperson (North) James Kaunda said the party will field a new face, Charles Mlogero. He said the candidate who contested in the last elections did not express interest to participate again.

People’s Party (PP) provincial chairperson (North) Christopher Ngwira did not pick up his phone when called. However, Mzuzu City mayor William Mkandawire identified the PP candidate as Black Gondwe, adding the party will be unveiling him soon.
