The remarks were made last Tuesday by the controller of Agricultural Extension and Technical Services, Wilfred Lipita, when he presided over the opening of the first Lilongwe Agricultural Fair which took place at Civo Stadium upper ground in Lilongwe.

The fair themed, Promoting Climate Smart Technologies for Food Security and Market- oriented Value Addition, has seen many farmers and agro-processing industries showcasing interesting raw and processed agricultural produce and products as well as home- manufactured agricultural processing machinery, to the amazement of patrons.

Speaking after touring the pavilions, Lipita said agro processing is very important because it adds value to produce as well as creating competitive market forces which benefit the farmer.

Said Lipita: “In supporting agro-processing and agricultural development in the rural areas, let us not forget the environment. The environment can get highly degraded resulting in poor soils.”

The fair run for three days.
