Ailing boxer appeals for help from well-wishers

Zomba-based amateur bantamweight boxer Stanley Toleza is appealing to well-wishers to assist him meet medical costs for an ailment which has rendered him inactive since January this year.

The 25-year-old fighter made the appeal on Tuesday. He has been diagnosed of acute lymphoblastic leukaemia.

According to a prescription in his hands dated March 16 2012, oncologist Dr. L. Masamba stated that the ailment could either be managed at Mwaiwathu Private Hospital in Blantyre or South Africa. He has spent over K50 000 ($200) for medical treatment locally.

The prescription reads in part “the condition is due to the aggression of the chemotherapy required and the type of clinical support required.”

The boxer explained that the problem started one January morning when he woke up with a puffy face.

“This was compounded with getting tired quickly after doing exercises. But the doctors ruled out the sport of boxing as the cause of the ailment,” he said.

Toleza started boxing in 2004 at Zomba Airbase Boxing Club, but later switched his allegiance to China Boxing Club in the old capital. He has two national championship medals to his credit.
