The Airtel Rising Star Football Season Five launch takes place this Saturday in Salima with Under-17 gems expected to be granted a platform to showcase their talent.

Malawi Schools Sports Association (Massa) general secretary Blackson Malamula on Monday said an exhibition game between Airtel select side against their Salima counterparts would spice up the re-launch at the community centre.Matindi_airtel_football

“The select comprises secondary school players selected from last year’s tournament and were supposed to represent Malawi in an international tournament in Gabon, but the event was cancelled due to Ebola fears,” Malamula said.

He said the tournament already started a few weeks ago at zonal level and would soon shift to district then national level to produce national champion.

Moyale Community Day Secondary School are the national defending champions. There is K1 million at stake in the competition which Airtel Malawi sponsors.

“We really appreciate the sponsorship that Airtel pumps into the competition which has produced players such as Ernest Tambe, Isaac Mwale (both of Fisd Wizards) and Precious Msosa (Be Forward Wanderers),” he added.

Airtel public relations manager Edith Tsilizani had, at the time of going to press, not responded to The Nation’s questionnaire regarding Saturday’s launch. 
