Alliance Capital netball team has roped in legendary netballer Mary Waya as coach on a two-year renewable contract starting January next year.

This was announced last Friday during the Alliance One Capital Limited’s 10-year celebrations.

The development brings to an end Thunder Queens and Waya’s lengthy romance spanning over a decade as both coach and player.

Alliance Capital chief executive officer Christian Majavina said Waya has been taken on board due to the team’s poor performance last season.

“This is part of our corporate responsibility, we do not have money as we are one of the fastest growing brands in the country, but we had to intervene. Netball puts Malawi on the map and we are concerned about our team’s struggles. We, therefore, thought it wise to bring in Mary Waya,” said Majavina.

“It also has to be borne in mind that in a way, we are assisting Waya as she will be hired on full-time basis. She is a legend.”

Majavina said the contract will be performance-based.

He said the company plans to inject K5 million each year for the two years which will be used for training and upkeep allowances.

When contacted for comment, Waya who is also national team assistant coach, said she could not comment as she was in transit from Lilongwe.

Alliance Capital Limited has been sponsoring the team for the past two years.
