Alumni in K4 million help to Masongola Secondary School
Masongola Secondary School Alumni Association has given K4 million towards the maintenance of 335 beds that were broken at the school’s hostels.
The association’s chairperson Steve Macheso said the situation at the school was dire as some students were falling down from damaged beds at night.
He said quality education is not only in classrooms, but the surrounding environment such as hostels are also key.
“Majority of the beds have been fixed and we are working towards the construction of the fence and other infrastructure to achieve quality education,” he said.
The school’s acting head teacher Kondwawaka Saka acknowledged the initiative, saying it rescued the students from harsh conditions.
She said: “Some students were sleeping on the floor without social distance, thereby exposing themselves to the further spread of Covid-19.
“We appeal for more support in the renovation of toilets and bathrooms, among other basic education needs.”
The school’s head girl Betty Baisoni said the fixing of beds will improve their performance in class.
“Sometimes we could lose concentration in the evening studies when we remembered where we will sleep after the studies,” she said.
The school has an enrolment of more than 600 students.
