Ambassador hails Egypt-Malawi relations
Egyptian Ambassador Maher El-Adawy has hailed the cooperation between Malawi and Egypt, saying the diplomatic relations are on track to reach unprecedented levels.
Speaking in Lilongwe during celebrations marking Egypt’s national day which falls on July 23, El-Adawy said a lot has happened in recent months that demonstrate the blossoming relations between the two countries.
He said apart from the meeting between President Peter Mutharika and his Egyptian counterpart Abdel Fattah El-Sisi at Sharma El Sheik in Egypt, the two countries have also signed several bilateral agreements in various sectors of the economy.
Said El-Adawy: “We have signed three memoranda of understanding [MoU] to cooperate in the fields of agriculture, tourism and investment.
“We have also successfully completed more than 70 capacity building programmes in different sectors of the economy, mainly agriculture, health, security and police, trade and Investment and many more.”
He said Egypt has provided study scholarships and has started the process to establishing two factories for the processing of tobacco and manufacturing cigarettes.
Egypt has also donated and installed three state-of-the-art medical units in the fields of ophthalmology, cardiology and intensive care unit worth $250 000.
Relations between Egypt and Malawi have also extended to sports where the Pharaohs played Malawi’s Flames and won 2-1 in a friendly football match at Borg El-Arab stadium in Egypt on June 8 2015.
Since the early 1950s, Egyptians have been celebrating their national day on 23 July to commemorate the end of a monarchy and the birth of the republic.
