Anglican Church, German foundation partner on school

The Anglican Diocese of Southern Malawi has teamed up with German charity Landt Foundation in a new private secondary school project in Blantyre Rural.

Construction of the school, named St Paul’s Anglican Private Secondary School (SPAPSS) started in January this year and is expected to be handed over to the diocese on September 2 2024 ahead of the new academic year on September 16 2024.

The diocese has since appointed a board of governors to run the school for four years. Some members of the board undertook a familiarisation tour of the facility on Tuesday this week.

Briefing the board of governors during the tour, Aaron Landt from Landt Foundation said they signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the diocese on October 31 2023 and a ground-breaking ceremony was held on November 10 2023.

He said: “We are a charitable organisation registered in Germany and we are financing and implementing charitable projects at home and abroad. Some of our objectives include promotion of education and vocational training, including student aid. We have already successfully constructed a school project in Malawi at Angelo Goveya Primary School in Blantyre last year.”

The school’s board of governors chairperson Peter Chiwaula said it was necessary for the members to visit the project site to appreciate the works.

Besides Chiwaula, the board of governors also comprises economist and former Likoma Island legislator George Kamwanja, lawyer Chifwayi Chirambo, media consultant Mc Donald Chapalapata, business executives Gwynth Mchiela and Chimwemwe Chimwaza, former corporate guru Esther Chioko, IT consultant Immanuel Ndilowe, entrepreneur Harrison Longwe, Anglican priest Father Willard Kamandani, academician George Ambali, diocesan secretary John Sikoti, a representative of the Parents and Teachers Association and diocesan Education secretary Canon Justice Msini
