Anti-gay messages dominate rain prayers

Messages against homosexuality dominated the inter denominational prayers for the rains which were organised at Bingu International Conference Centre (BICC) yesterday.

During the prayers attended by delegates, including President Peter Mutharika, representatives of the donor community and opposition party leaders—the sermon in Chichewa given by Reverend Flackson Kuyama of the Seventh Day Adventist and the one in English given by Reverend Alex Maulana of Malawi Council of Churches were loaded with messages labelling homosexuality as an evil that could lead God to punish the country for propagating it.

Said Maulana, “You know in Malawi we have reached a point where we love money more than God such as where people can attack fellow human beings with albinism because they believe that they can make money out of such a people. And even others are forming organisations whose intention is to propagate sinful issues…be it gay or whatever, yes they are my fellow Malawians, but I don’t like the act! Let’s not propagate issues that are going to bring curse on our country, love your land.”

The anti-gay sentiments are coming at the time government has just issued a moratorium through Justice Minister Samuel Tembenu on prosecuting homosexuality acts.

Government also dropped the recent case of sodomy charges against two men arrested on December 7 2015 in Lilongwe.

Reverend Clifford Baloyi of Livingstonia Synod who gave an intercessory prayer in Chitumbuka said because of immoral behaviour which is manifested in people’s dressing and sexual behaviour such as homosexuality, God is not giving Malawi sufficient rains.

The speakers also bemoaned degeneration of love which has led people to commit corruption as such an intercessory prayer for the economy and against corruption was offered by Bishop Gifford Matoga while prayer for peace, love and unity was done by Bishop Kalemba of the Anglican Church.

Prayer for the youth was done by pastor Peter Banda and finally Malawi was dedicated to God by Apostle Madalitso Mbewe. n
