President Peter Mutharika has been appointed as Global He For She impact champion. The appointment, made by the United Nations (UN) headquarters is with effect from Monday, June 1, 2015. State House says the president has accepted the appointment.

He For She is a solidarity campaign for gender equality initiated by UNWomen with a goal to engage men and boys as agents of change for the achievement of gender equality and women’s rights by encouraging them
to take action against inequalities faced by women and girls.

Presidential press secretary Gerald Viola, in a statement released today said “the United Nations headquarters has identified His Excellency President Mutharika for the appointment because of his commitment to achieve gender equality and women empowerment; ending
child marriages and gender-based violence.”

Mutharika’s new appointment is coming on the heels of other two notable appointments by the Regional Universities Forum for Capacity Building in Agriculture (Ruforum) as Champion of Higher Education in Africa as well as member of the leadership council for the New Alliance for Food Security and Nutrition and the Grow African Partnership–initiatives set up by the G7 and African governments and private sector respectively.
