Peter Mutharika returned from Mozambique on Thursday with a call for political coexistence between incumbent President and former heads of State for Malawi to move forward.

Speaking to journalists at Kamuzu International Airport in Lilongwe, Mutharika said he was impressed to see Joachim Chissano, Armando Guebuza and current Mozambican president Filipe Nyusi chatting and laughing at the table they sat.

“They support each other so that they move their country forward. This is something that we should learn from,” said the visibly impressed Mutharika.

The President said it was sad that in Malawi, there is too much individualism, negativity, political hatred and enmity among incumbents and former presidents which, he said, must end if Malawi is to make progress.

Furthermore, Mutharika said in Mozambique, presidents hand over power without hard feelings, which was a thinly unveiled attack on former president Joyce Banda who refused to attend Mutharika’s inauguration and officially hand over power.

Turning to trade, Mutharika disclosed that the two neighbouring countries will be signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Mozambique, which would enhance mutual development benefit between the two countries.

The President was welcomed by Vice-President Saulos Chilima, senior government officials and members of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP). n
