Malawi President Peter Mutharika on Wednesday told Zambia and the People’s Republic of China that he expects Malawi’s diplomatic relations with the two countries to be strengthened.

Malawi’s sentiments were confirmed by both new Zambian High Commissioner to Malawi Salome Mwansa Mwananshuku and the new People’s Republic of China’s new Ambassador Zhang Qingyang after they presented their letters of credence and had separate audiences, in camera, with Mutharika at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe.

The two were the first diplomats to be accredited by the President since his election into office in May this year.

Mwananshuku said she was touched by the President’s determination to make Malawi and Zambia build on their historic and strong bilateral ties dating back to the two nations’ independence in 1964.

“We discussed a number of issues and we touched on how we can improve this relationship for the betterment of our people,” she stated.

The new High Commissioner said citizens of the two countries stand to benefit from the bilateral friendship though renewed efforts in economic, social and cultural projects.

Addressing reporters after his audience with Mutharika, Qingyang said China and Malawi reviewed their relationship that has been growing “rapidly and smoothly” over the past six years of its existence, resulting in the completion of all major projects the Chinese Government had promised to provide the people in Malawi.

He said the President had stressed the need for the two governments to upgrade their relationship in order to deliver more fruits of development for their people through hard work, particularly in the sectors of infrastructural development, education and health.
