President Arthur Peter Mutharika has saluted the Flames for qualifying for the group stages of the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

He also saluted the Malawi Queens for retaining the fifth position at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.

“The State President followed the games with keen interest. He noted there were scores of difficulties to overcome, all designed to qualify for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations and the impressive performances by the Queens at the Commonwealth Games in Scotland.

“With such men and women cooperating, each marvelous pass, tackle, defence and interception, the enviable performance by the Queens at the Commonwealth Games and today’s win by the Flames is a result of resilience, focus and dedication in the face of great difficulty,” read part of the press statement signed by deputy presidential press secretary Timpunza Mwansambo.

The statement further said the triumphs show that “small and poor as we may be, we are yet to realise our potential”.

“As a nation, we owe our national teams an unpayable debt. Their inspiring performance over the weekend is good news to all of us. The Government of Malawi remains committed to supporting the Flames and the Queens and of course all the sporting disciplines in our beloved nation.”
