President Peter Mutharika has congratulated Malawi’s Flames following a 1-0 win over Uganda Cranes during the 51st Independence Anniversary Celebrations match played at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre on Monday.

Speaking Monday evening at Sanjika Palace during a State Banquet hosted in honour of Zambian President Edgar Lungu, Mutharika, while wishing the two teams successful campaigns in their forthcoming fixtures, described the match as “wonderful and exciting”.

The President only watched the first half of the match, leaving behind his high-profile guests including Lungu and Kenya’s Vice-President William Ruto, who watched to the end alongside Vice-President Saulos Chilima.

“I would like to congratulate the Malawi national football team fondly known as the Flames and Cranes of Uganda for the wonderful and exciting match at stadium this afternoon,” he said.

Mutharika then wished the Flames and Cranes fruitful crusades as they prepare for the 2017 African Cup of Nations and 2018 World Cup qualifiers.

He encouraged both teams to remain optimistic ahead of their games and not allow the performance and result of the friendly match affect their morale.

Recalled Flames’ striker Chiukepo Msowoya justified his inclusion in the squad and why he is the current top scorer for Big Bullets when his late thundering header gave the Flames and interim coach Ernest Mtawali the much needed winner.
