Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Corporation George Chaponda says Mutharika’s visit to China this week gives Malawi hope for new Chinese government funded projects. Chaponda said this on Sunday just a few hours before the President left for China.

He said Mutharika will meet China’s Prime Minister Li Keqiang and the two will table for discussion a number of new projects for Malawi.peter_stadium

State House says the President will also meet several investors interested to start activities in the country.

Malawi has been in bilateral ties with China since dumping the island Taiwan for mainland China in December 2007.

And since the marriage, China has initiated a number of development projects in the country and funded a number of scholarships for Malawians to join students from other countries at Chinese universities.

Among the Chinese-initiated developments are the Malawi University of Science and Technology (Must) at Ndata in Thyolo, the Presidential Villas in Lilongwe, the Karonga-Chitipa Road which extends to the border with Zambia, the New Parliament Building, a five-star hotel and the Bingu International Conference Centre (Bicc) and the Bingu Stadium, currently in the final phases of construction.
