Army teams dominate Finness Schools Chess

Army Secondary School underlined their supremacy in the Finness Southern Region Chess League (SRCL) Schools Tournament last weekend when they won both the boys’ and girls’ titles.

The boys’ team claimed the glory through a buchollz tie-breaker after tying on eight points with runner-up Domasi Demonstration Secondary School.

St. Patrick’s Secondary School finished third with seven points.

Army’s girls’ side got the crown after collecting nine points, a point ahead of second-placed Jacaranda Secondary School and three in front of third-positioned Michiru View Secondary School.

Nevertheless, it was the individual category that produced an astonishing surprise as national champion Khwima Gondwe of Chichiri Primary School played second-fiddle to rising star Chiyembekezo Chilembwe of Blantyre Baptist School.

Although Chilembwe took the top slot through a tie-breaker after tying on five points with runner-up Khwima and third-positioned Rafik Namangale of Namiwawa Private School, this showed great improvement of skills among other up-and-coming stars, according to SRCL schools’ coordinator Margaret Ngugama.

In the women’s section, Joyce Banda Foundation’s (JBF) chess whizkid Faith Gondwe did it as expected with 2.5 points. Her schoolmate Gwala Nagawa and Zaithwa Chibisa of St. Patrick’s took second and third places with two points and 1.5 points respectively.

Kalibu Academy’s Tinashe Jumbe emerged as the best player in the team while Ronaldo Gondwe was the best in the boys’ section.

Gilton Nkumbwa, an arbiter sanctioned by the world chess governing body, Fide, sponsored the competition with chess and academic materials with support from Mdina Business Solutions’ managing director Tiwone Mdina.n
