If I were

President of the Republic of Malawi  I would live to my word to offer an olive branch to my political opponents.

If I were His Excellency APM, I would realise that my tone and speech during the rally I addressed at Masintha Ground in Lilongwed on Sunday did not reflect someone who was ready to forget and forgive, but someone who still bears a grudge against the previous government for arresting me on treason charges.

I would realise that my mood at Masintha did not paint a picture of a forgiving leader, but someone who is ready to hit back at political opponents. In fact,  the impression one got was that if Amayi or Chenjo Golo was anywhere nearby, munakamunyenyanyenya!

Oh yes, if I were the president I would realise that so far people have hailed me for my style of leadership, but my tone on Sunday would make them think twice.

If only I were the big shot that is Peter, I would have dwelt on telling my supporters my development agenda other than waste time on bygones that will not help me and indeed the nation in any way.

I would also realise that my announcement that I will contest in 2019 will not stop internal succession strife because even if I announce my candidature it will not stop others, including Garry Chirwa to exercise their freedom to contest for the hot seat.

That is of course if I were His Excellency Arthur Peter Mutharika, unfortunately I am not him. Chala m’mwamba! chala m’mwamba!

President of the Republic of Malawi and leader of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), I would not make an issue of rumours about my position as regards the 2019 presidential elections because rumour-mongers will always be there and as the First Citizen, I will always be at the centre of such gossips.

If I were APM, I would realise that whether some people are spreading rumours should not really bother me because it paints a picture as if I were desperate to remain in power come what may.

In fact, I would know that rumour -mongers will always be there and that is why I was linked to several women not long ago, but the truth later surfaced that to the contrary, the lady who won my heart was actually Gertrude Hendrina.

Oh yes, I would further realise, if I were His Excellency, that the picture I am painting is that having had the feel of mpando wonona, I have realised just how tempting the hot seat is.

I would also realise that my declaration somehow defeats the whole essence of democracy as others who might want to contest with me at the party convention—the likes of Saulos Chilima, George Chaponda, Henry Mussa and indeed myself (why not?)— might be afraid to come out in the open to declare interest on the same.

I would further appreciate, if I were my good professor that it is also a bit too early to talk about the next elections considering that I am just over three months into my first term and, therefore, the expectation is that I should focus on my development plans.

That is if I were Professor APM. Unfortunately, it is just a mere wish for I will remain Garry Chirwa!
