Association calls for improved access to safe water

Michiru Water Users Association has decried lack of access to safe drinking water in Kabula, Blantyre, saying most people still walk long distances to get clean water.

Chairperson for the association, Knox Malinki, said this on Friday during a meeting held at Chirimba Primary School.

Malinki said there is slow progress in topping up the list of kiosks in the area, a development which makes access to safe water a continuous problem.

“Our goal is to ensure people have access to clean water after walking only 50 metres. Currently, most people walk over a kilometre to get clean water while some are still drinking unsafe water because of distance,” Malinki said.

He said the association, which covers Kabula Constituency, is struggling in its mission to construct new kiosks because some people vandalise equipment.

“Our plan is to use money collected from the kiosks to construct new ones, but it is sad that a lot of     money is used on rehabilitation of vandalised kiosks,” said Malinki.
