Tingopenya Nazombe and Willy Kaunde shone like beacons in the junior lawn tennis competition held at Zomba Gymkhana Club on Sunday.

The competition drew together close to 60 boys and girls from within the city.

In boys categories, Nazombe defeated Chipangano Sandukira 6-3, 6-2 in Under-18 whereas Kaunde emerged winner over Levi Mungwa following 6-1, 6-0 wins in Under-16.

In girls Under-10 category, Wendy Gamula beat Chimwemwe Kapita whereas in Under-12, Gloria Christopher won against Georgina Kamungu. Chikondi Sandukira beat Tamandani Kaunde in Under-16 category whereas Charles Mdala triumphed over Samson Tchanga in boys Under-10.

Speaking after the competition, Lawn Tennis Association of Malawi (LTAM) president Duncan Gumbi said the competition was part of an initiative to unearth talent at the grass roots.

“We thought of arranging for a competition to see whether the athletes have gained some tactics in the holiday training sessions. It has been the custom to do this because our aim is to identify those that are doing well,” said Gumbi.
