Musicians have mourned the death of Atoht Manje, who died on Saturday night  shortly after a stage performance. at University of Livingstonia.

Musicians Union of Malawi president Vita Chirwa described the passing on the artist as a big blow to the industry.

“This is very sad. We never heard that he was sick only to wake up to the news that he is gone. He had unique energy as an artist. We will surely miss him,” he said.

Renowned musician Billy Kaunda wrote on his Facebook page: “When talented artists die, it is very painful. My condolences to the family, friends, music fraternity and the whole nation.”

Gospel musician Princess Chitsulo said the death of Atoht Manje is painful and a loss to the arts industry.

“He was full of life and to hear of his passing so suddenly is painful,” she said.

According to the deceased’s brother Elias Samson Maluwa, the artist died on Saturday night after complaining of some discomfort immediately after his performance at University of Livingstonia.

“I got a call from his friend Saint early this morning [Sunday], saying that he has died. He said he complained of feeling too hot after his performance. He then fainted and when he was taken to the hospital, he was pronounced dead. At the moment, that is the account we have,” he said.

Maluwa said on their way to the show, he complained of ulcers and gas problems.

Atoth Manje, 34, real name Elias Missi Samson, came from Nsanyira Village, Traditional Authority Mponda in Mangochi district. He is survived by a wife and four children.

His remains are expected to be buried today in Mangochi.

Atoht Manje was one of the country’s unique artists with his beni and sikili touch which he borrowed from his ethnic Yao traditional dances.

His music discouraged jealousy and unfair treatment towards each other in all aspects of life.
