AU observers led by Nujoma arrive on May 10

The African Union Commission (AUC) has approved the deployment of African Union Observation Mission (AUEOM) for the May 20 Tripartite Elections to be headed by former president of Namibia Sam Nujoma.

In a press statement, the AUC says the group will be deployed in teams to cover different locations and observe all aspects of electoral processes after an invitation by the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC).

The AU team will also observe voter education, campaign activities of political parties and candidates, training of elections, media coverage, preparations for polling as well as complaints and appeals process.

“The AUEOM team will operate in accordance with relevant AU instruments for election observation such as the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance; the AU/OAU Declaration on Principles Governing Democratic Elections in Africa; and the AU Guidelines for Elections Observation and Monitoring Missions,” reads the statement in part.

The AU says the mission will arrive in the country on May 10.
