The African Union (AU) has called for the need for Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) commissioners and staff to be introduced to new reforms in the electoral processes if the country is to have credible elections in 2019. Samuel Atoubi, AU Commission senior political and elections officer for the Department of Political Affairs, said this at Liwonde in Machinga during the opening of a week-long training aimed to build capacity of MEC commissioners and staff on technology, financial and strategic planning. In his remarks, commissioner Wellington Nakanga, who chairs MEC’s finance and administration committee, said the training had come at a right time when MEC has adopted and is implementing its activities using the electoral cycle approach.
