‘Avoid corrupt practices’

Eastern Region Police  Commissioner Happy Mkandawire has warned traffic police officers to refrain from corrupt practices.

He said this on Monday when he met traffic police officers from Zomba Police Station and the Eastern Region Police Headquarters.

He said unconfirmed reports indicate that some traffic officers solicit bribes from taxi operators in the name of ‘kugula njira’ (getting road permit).

“I know that you are always tempted [to receive bribes], but you should work professionally by rejecting the bribes and arrest those attempt to bribe you,” said Mkandawire.

On his part, regional traffic officer Witness Kasonya said the warning was timely as it will help to keep the officers in check.

“This serves as a warning to any officer who will solicit bribes on the road.  Such officer will be punished because we do not want to dent the image of the police,” he said.

A participant Steven Kedala said the training came at the right time.

“We will work professionally to restore public trust in traffic police officers,” he said.
