Avoid corruption, DC tells officers

Mangochi acting district commissioner Bisai Mtayamanja has urged the council’s members of staff to desist from corrupt practices.

Speaking on Saturday when the council engaged the staff on the importance of institutional integrity committee (IIC), he said the council was committed to implementing projects to change the district’s face.

Mtayamanja said: “The Act of Parliament and the National Anti-Corruption Strategy II requires public institutions to form IICs to fight corruption.

“At our council, we also have this committee to help us check corruption. Therefore, let us not fall into the temptations of engaging in corruption.”

He warned that the council will punish any member of staff who will be involved in corrupt practices.

“We have already sensitised the area development committees in two traditional authorities [T/As] and we will do the same with the remaining ones,” he said.

The council’s cashier Nellie Paundi said the sensitisation equipped them with skills on how to fight corruption.

“We will endeavour to avoid instances that can lead us to corruption,” she said.

T/A Bwananyambi ADC chairperson Saimon Kazembe said they will join the council to spread corruption messages in their areas.

“The IICs are important because they will help in the fight against corruption in communities where various projects are being implemented,” he said.

Meanwhile, the district’s National Initiative for Civic Education Trust programmes officer Joseph Chamambala has commended the council for establishing IICs.
