The battle for the top-four slots in the four groups of the K2 million (about $5 000) Justice Katika Football Trophy in Bangwe Township has reached the climax.

Half the teams in the four groups have booked a place in the round of 16 and these are Group A: Bangwe Babies, Bangalala United; Group B: Kondowe Socials and Green Lalanje; Group C: Mthandizi All Stars and Faluja; Group D: Mbayani and Bangwe Jamaica.

The tournament’s organising secretary Joseph Semu said the last two teams in each group will be identified by the end of next week.

Forty-two teams divided into four groups are participating in the tournament and the four top teams from each group will qualify into the round of 16.

“The tournament has been very competitive and exciting and all that remains now is to identify the number three and four teams from each group to complete the line-up for round of 16,” he said.

Semu also said the round of 16 will be played during the weekend of April 5-6 while the quarter-finals are slated for the weekend of April 12-13.

The semi-finals are ear-marked for the weekend of April 19-20 whereas the finals will be played a week later.

Sponsor of the tournament Justice Katika, who is aspiring for the area’s parliamentary seat, said he is happy with the progress.

“The tournament has attracted a lot of excitement and interest and hopefully established teams will take it as an opportunity to scout for promising talent,” he said.
