BB, Nomads claim Carlsberg deal

With the curtain having been pulled down to mark the end of the season, both Big Bullets and Mighty Wanderers claim to have done better than the other in the contest for the ultimate Carlsberg Malawi sponsorship.

Bullets chairperson Malinda Chinyama on Monday said having won the Presidential Cup coupled with losing the TNM Super League title by a whisker, his team has had an edge over their bitter rivals in terms of performance.

In the other factors, Chinyama says the two teams were at par in terms of fair play, but claims Bullets had edge over the Nomads on discipline.

“I believe if we weigh all the factors that were put forward to determine the winner of the sponsorship, then we deserve to be picked.

“We won the Presidential Cup and only the goal difference separated us from the eventual Super League champions Silver Strikers.

“As for discipline, we were exonerated of the only violence that affected us in a Carlsberg Cup match against Super Eagles in Mzuzu while on fairplay, I would say we were neck and neck with our friends.

“So, in as far as we are concerned, the writing is on the wall and we have scored highly and if Carlsberg Malawi were to be fair, then they would pick us,” said Chinyama.

He also added that his team boasts a large fan base as compared to ‘Nyerere’.

“A serious entrepreneur would therefore go for us,” said Chinyama.

Commenting on head-to-head clashes, Chinyama said they beat their rivals in the Carlsberg Shield match [2-1] as well as the second round of the league [3-0].

However, his Wanderers counterpart George Chamangwana also claimed that based on the factors that were put forward by the sponsor, they have had an edge over their age-old rivals.

“Of course, they won the Presidential Cup, but we also won the Standard Bank.

“And while they [Bullets] might have finished as the league as runners-up, we were not far off on fourth position. It should also be borne in mind that Bullets were booted out in the first round of the Carlsberg Cup while we went all the way to the quarter-finals,” he said.

However, Carlsberg Malawi senior brands manager [alcoholics] Twikale Chirwa said they will soon announce on how they will proceed.

“For now, I would rather not say much on the issue until further consultations are made,” said Chirwa.
