Big Bullets have said they fail to understand why the Standard Bank Cup has eluded them for all these years.

The club’s chairperson Kondi Msungama and one of the senior players Fischer Kondowe believe they could turn the fortunes around by winning the eighth edition.

The People’s Team take on Super League rookies Airborne Rangers this afternoon at Civo Stadium in Lilongwe in the second preliminary match.

“It is a mystery, why we have failed to win the cup in the past seven years considering that we have been able to win other competitions with ease, sometimes maybe three times in a row.

“Maybe, it was just bad luck, but this time around, we won’t look back and Airborne should watch out,” said Msungama.

Kondowe said with their rich vein of consistent form, they could go all the way.

“The mission starts with Airborne and we are determined,” he said.

Today’s match comes barely three days after Bullets’ Carlsberg Cup glory.

“That is all water under the bridge now. The celebrations ended on Sunday and by Monday, we had already switched focus to the Standard Bank Cup,” said Kondowe.

The only time Bullets came close to winning the cup was in 2008 when they lost to Moyale Barracks 1through the dreaded penalty shootout after Chikumbutso Kanyenda missed the decisive penalty.

However, Airborne spokesperson Lieutenant Chance Nyembezi said they are prepared to give Bullets a good run for their money.

“We respect them as a big team, but we don’t fear them. We are paratroopers and we launch aerial attacks,” said Nyembezi.

The military side has been boosted by Stain Malata and Noel Mlelemba who have finally been cleared by Epac FC.

Their other key men are Ased Ayami and Leonard Mgomezulu.

The winner of today’s match will face Mafco in the quarter-finals.
