Big Bullets have politely turned down Mozambican national champions Liga Maculmana’s request to release midfield maestro Chimango ‘Blackberry’ Kayira for a trial match against South African Premier Soccer League (PSL) side Mamelodi Sundowns at the weekend.

Bullets general secretary Higger Mkandawire said while they are ready and willing to release the player, they cannot afford to do so now as the club is in hot contention for the TNM Super League title they last won 10 years ago.

Apparently, it has transpired that Maculmana are looking for Joseph Kamwendo’s replacement ahead of their CAF Champions League participation and Kamwendo respectively recommended Kayira and his former Mighty Wanderers teammate Alfred Manyozo Jnr.

“We were indeed approached by the Mozambican team through players’ agent Felix Sapao and much as we would not want to stand in his [Chimango’s] way, we can only release him after the chase for the title is over,” said Mkandawire.

Kayira said while he understood Bullets’ position, he fears that the move could jeorpadise his chances of clinching a deal.

“They wanted to assess me specifically in the game against Sundowns and my worry is that they [Maculmana] could change their mind and look for someone else since time is not on their side,” said Kayira.

Kamwendo confirmed suggesting Kayira and Manyozo as his possible replacements.

“They have what it takes and I made a suggestion to the director Rafiq Sidaat to seriously consider inviting either or both of them for trials,” said Kamwendo.
