Bingu’s convoy kills man

One of the security vehicles on Malawi President Bingu wa Mutharika’s motorcade on Monday hit a man as he attempted to cross the Haile Selaisse Road near Nandos in Blantyre.

The man, Edwin Kagolo (38), died later at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital.

Southern Region Police spokesperson Nicholas Gondwa on Tuesday said the convoy was on its way to Ndata Farm from Sanjika Palace where Mutharika met traditional leaders for talks.

“The accident happened when Kagolo was crossing the road near Nandos in Blantyre. Our police vehicle, a Land Cruiser, knocked him down.

“He sustained injuries on the left side and also   in the head. He was rushed to Queen Elizabeth but unfortunately, he passed away last night and right now we are waiting for the identification of his relatives,” said Gondwa.

He said the convoy was cruising at normal speed and that according to the Road Traffic Act, motorists, pedestrians and cyclists are supposed to give way to the motorcade.

Gondwa said they will investigate the cause of the accident which happened at about 2:15 pm.

“The accident will be investigated to establish the cause of the accident. If it is found that it was our vehicle in the wrong or that it was the deceased’s mistake, normal procedures will be followed,” he said.

Kagolo came from Hiwa Village, T/A Kwataine in Ntcheu.
