Youths from the United Transformation Movement (UTM) and people from various backgrounds gathered in Blantyre’s central business district near Ziboliboli kiosk on Sunday for a candlelight memorial in honour of Vice-President Saulos Klaus Chilima, who died in a plane crash in Mzimba on June 10.

Music by artists such as Eli Njuchi, Onesimus, and Leslie Moyo provided entertainment, with many attendees holding white candles. Deviating from his usual style, Onesimus began with praise and worship songs.

People from all walks of life came to pay their last respects

However, he concluded the event by performing his popular song Controller, telling the audience it was time to celebrate the life of Chilima.

Later, Eli Njuchi performed his hit songs Tempolale and Z, among others. This event, which also took place in Lilongwe and Mzuzu, was part of a series of activities to honour the late Chilima.

In an interview, UTM national youth director Penjani Kalua, popularly known as Fredokiss, said the event was meant to help the youth who admired SKC find closure and celebrate his life.

In a related development, seasoned musician ‘Soldier’ Lucius Banda, who is also presidential adviser on youth, in his tribute has asked people to honour Chilima’s legacy with love, peace and tranquility as they are values which he espoused.

“Since the news of his passing, my heart has been heavy with grief. Yet, I find solace that God holds the answers to all questions.

“To me, SKC was more than a leader. He was a brother, a fellow warrior, catholic and a kindred spirit. As I write from my hospital bed, I stand in solidarity with all Malawians, his family and the UTM community in mourning the loss of a father figure, trusted leader and a friend to many,” he posted on his Facebook page.
