Blue Eagles target K7m windfall

A fter missing out on winning the Super League title, Blue Eagles who face Red Lions at Kamuzu Stadium this afternoon, have set their sights set on finishing the season as runners-up.

If the now fourth-placed Malawi Police Service (MPS) sponsored outfit scoops that position, it will pocket K7 million ($11,175) as prize money, according to the financial breakdown of the K90 million ($143,678) TNM sponsorship.

Lions and Eagles face off in a replay after their first encounter was abandoned, amid heavy rains, at Balaka Stadium two weeks ago. Eagles were leading 1-0 with less than 30 minutes remaining.

Speaking ahead of the replay, Eagles assistant coach Wilson Chidati said their target is to win the match to boost their chances of finishing second.

Eagles, with 40 points, trail second-placed Mafco by seven points but they have two games in hand.

“We still have a big chance of finishing second so we will try to win all our remaining four matches. The first one being against Red Lions,” Chidati said.

Meanwhile, the assistant coach has disclosed that their top scorer John Malidadi Jnr will not play. He suffered an injury during their 3-0 win over presumptive champions Big Bullets in Lilongwe on Sunday.

“Though we will miss him, our game plan will not be affected because Wister Phiri has also started scoring goals. Again, Schumacher Kuwali, who was arrested, is geared to play. So we are still strong upfront,” he said.

Super League of Malawi (Sulom) has said the two sides will play a full game and not the 30 minutes that remained.

Chidati said his side is not bitter with the decision stating that “though we were in good position to win that [initial] match, we respect Sulom declaration that we should play a full match.”

Red Lions are currently on position eight having amassed 35 points from 24 matches. They still have a chance to finish among the top six and automatically qualify for the next edition of the Standard Bank Cup.

The Zomba-based soldiers will look up to their marksman Innocent Bokosi who is the flagship league leading scorer with 13 goals. n
