Dead bodies have been found belonging to three of the four women reported missing on Lake Malawi after their boat capsized in Nkhotakota  at Bondo fishing dock.

Nkhotakota Police spokesperson Williams Kaponda identified the three as Ruth Nyoni, 23, from Kombo village, Cecelia Kambemba, 32 and Mphatso Ndelemani, 27 from Phangwa village. They were all from the area of senior chief Malengachanzi in the district.

Said Kaponda: “The one still missing is Chidaya Ayame and people in the area are still searching for her,”

The women fell into the lake after their boat capsized while they were heading towards Sungu Island in Mtenje Village.

According to Kaponda, the boat had 15 passengers but the others were rescued.

Kaponda further added that the accident occurred due to overloading as the boat carried passengers beyond its capacity.
