Break through the wall

What do you do when you hit a wall? You want to make progress but you find yourself stuck. In such a situation don’t let quitting or giving up be your next step. Learn to break through any discouragement and over the hump of feeling stuck. Here are some tips;

Concentrate on something you can change:  It’s normal to want to give up when you don’t get what you want and easy to focus on what’s not working or the things that you can’t do anything about. Instead figure out what you can change. Don’t just react, be proactive. Have intentional actions that you’ll do explicitly to avoid getting into a rut of helplessness.

Repeat behaviours that give you energy: If not, you’ll lose steam and become vulnerable to distraction. Besides, it’s easier to keep up your momentum if you keep moving than to start moving again after you have stopped. Keep a rhythm so that you stay on track or at least in ‘’holding pattern’’ till you figure out what moves your forward.

Reflect and redirect:  Work out what needs to be different. Also find someone who will challenge your mindset and perceptions because sometimes you come to your wits end and need help. Practise looking at things from another angle. Find a different way to do things. Focus on process and not just results, find new sources of inspiration.

Appreciate the imperfect steps: When you are feeling like your back is against the wall, you may feel the need to make giant strides but even small imperfect steps will help. Even baby steps count so don’t discount them. Don’t think too far into the future. Keep a long term view in terms of direction and but do the little things every day.

Now take action: Where are you spinning your wheels? What will you do about it? n
