Kalonga Gawa Undi, who reigns over Chewas in Malawi, Zambia and Mozambique, has requested government to facilitate order by insisting that chieftaincy succession wrangles be solved through the traditional justice system and not through court injunctions.

The king, who is based in the Eastern Province town of Katete in Zambia, said this when he met President Peter Mutharika at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe on Sunday.

Both the President and Gawa Undi attended the wedding of Senior Chief Chadza at his Msozi headquarters in Lilongwe District on Saturday afternoon.

In his closed-door discussions with the President, Gawa Undi expressed hope that government will help bring sanity among those with the tendency of securing court injunctions over chieftaincy squabbles.

Senior Chief Lukwa of Kasungu, speaking on behalf of Gawa Undi, said such people need to be referred to the traditional justice system, which has the capacity to settle these disagreements fairly.

Royalty decorum among the Chewas prevents the king from speaking anyhow in public, especially in the hearing of ordinary people.

Lukwa said Gawa Undi saluted the President and his government for continuing to promote and protect cultural heritage of not only the Chewas but also other tribes in the country.

In his remarks, Mutharika said he was happy that Chewas in the three neighbouring countries cooperated closely and contributed to the greater unity being enjoyed by all citizens in Malawi, Zambia and Mozambique. 
