British Council, the United Kingdom (UK) international organisation for cultural relations and educational opportunity, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, wants to improve the teaching of English language in the country’s schools.

British Council acting country manager Patience Mahlalela said in an interview on Wednesday they have so far held three workshops.

She pledged the council’s support towards the enhancement of teachers’ skills.

Said Mahlalela: “Firstly, English is one of major languages of commerce and education. Thus, British Council recognises that English provides opportunities for a better future and again, being the language for instruction in Malawi, it is important that learners develop its mastery.”

British Council programmes manager Gift Thakwalakwa said the council has for a long time been working to improve the quality of the language in the country.

“We also have professional development opportunities for English language practitioners,” he said.

The council is engaging teachers from primary, secondary and tertiary institutions.
