Bullets’ real test, face Silver today

Presidential Cup reigning champions Big Bullets get a real test in their title defence this afternoon when they face Silver Strikers in a potentially explosive quarter-final qualifying showdown.

The setting is Civo Stadium in the capital, Lilongwe.

The remarkable resilience shown by the People’s Team in recent times has been a refreshing throwback to their golden era when they, powered by an indomitable spirit, were the kings of the domestic football scene.

Last year, they ended a decade of cup drought when they won the Presidential showpiece, but Bullets are aware that, this time around, they will need to sweat more to boost their chances of defending the cup.

And after a crammed 2014 World Cup schedule with the Flames, Bullets coach Eddington Ng’onamo has switched focus to yet another uphill task this afternoon.

“It is definitely going to be very tough because it involves two big clubs and there is a lot at stake.

“But we are the defending champions and our aim is to defend the cup and we are set for the battle,” said Ng’onamo.

Midfield workhorse Chimango ‘BlackBerry’ Kayira will put aside his frustration of scoring a late own goal that led to the Flames to a 2-2 draw with Kenya’s Harambee Stars last Wednesday and lift his teammates by sheer force of will.

Wonderboy Gabadinho Mhango, revitalised Diverson Mlozi, James Chilapondwa, versatile winger Douglas ‘Chibadula’ Chirambo, Fischer ‘Anong’a’ Kondowe and Henry ‘Magetsi’ Kabichi will be thrown into battle.

To qualify for the round of 16, the People’s Team demolished Escom United 6-0.

On the other hand, Silver’s team manager S’busiso ‘Shaka’ Padambo admitted that it will not be easy playing another tough game within three days.

“It’s not that easy playing two tough games within such a period, but then we have no choice. Nevertheless, we are prepared for the match.

“We respect Bullets, but we do not fear them,” said Padambo—wise words indeed.

The Bankers edged Epac 1-0 on Friday to qualify for the round of 16. Jester Mulima scored probably the fastest goal of the tournament within the first 30 seconds.
