Bullets dominate FDH Bank Cup players nominations

FCB Nyasa Bullets have dominated the list of nominees for the 2023 FDH Bank Cup players’ awards which is dominated by FCB Nyasa Bullets players.

Out of the eight nominees for Player of the Tournament, Discovery of the Tournament, Best Goalkeeper and Top Goal Scorer, four are from Bullets, including Hassan Kajoke who has won the Golden Boot with five goals.

Bullets midfielder Patrick Mwaungulu is  also in line for the Player of the Tournament award.

A statement from Football Association of Malawi (FAM) says the midfielder has been nominated for his impressive performance which helped the Bullets defend the cup.

The statement reads: “Mwaungulu was one of the few ever-present members as Bullets defended the FDH Bank Cup. He started all the five matches.

“He won three Player of the Match awards, including in the final against Mafco. He was involved in eight of Bullets’ 13 goals, scoring two and assisting six.”

Mwaungulu will be up against Mafco centre-back Paul Ndhlovu and Dedza Dynamos Salima Sugar’s forward Clement Nyondo.

Ndhlovu led the Salima-based team to the final and he was the hero in the semi-final as his only goal helped Mafco beat Mighty Wanderers to set up a final against Bullets.

Nyondo, on the other hand,  helped Dedza to reach the last four of a national cup for the first time.

He scored  two goals and won two Player of the Match awards in three games.

Bullets goalkeeper Rabson Chiyenda has been nominated for Best Goalkeeper award, alongside Wanderers’ Williams Thole and Santhe Admarc stopper Zahaya Malithano.

Chiyenda’s nomination follows his performance in the cup which included a clean sheet in the final.

Thole, on the other hand, had a fine run in the tournament with two clean sheets.

Malithano got the nomination for his impressive performance in the matches against TNM Super League sides.

The Central Region Football League side knocked out Mighty Tigers and Kamuzu Barracks in round of 32 and round of 16 respectively, before they lost to Wanderers. 

He saved two spot kicks in post-match penalties in each match.

Malithano will also battle out Bullets Ephraim Kondowe and Extreme FC goalkeeper McLean Mwale for the Discovery of the Tournament award.

FAM competitions and communications director Gomezgani Zakazaka in an interview said following the nominations by the competitions technical study group, a selected group of coaches, and some football journalists will vote for the awards winners.

He said the winners will be crowned at a function to be hosted by sponsors FDH Bank plc at a date to be confirmed in due course.
