Bullets removed from Mphwiyo
Three bullets have been removed from the body of Malawi Treasury budget director Paul Mphwiyo, a week after he was shot at his house in Area 43 in Lilongwe.
Director of clinical services in the Ministry of Health Dr George Chithope Mwale on Saturday said Mphwiyo is still in the intensive care unit (ICU) at Milpark Clinic in Johannesburg, but is making good progress.
Chithope Mwale said the operation had to wait for swellings to subside before removing the bullets.
According to sources in South Africa, Mphwiyo is being guarded by Malawi Embassy security and South Africa police.
The sources said only family members, Malawi Embassy officials and other top Malawi Government officials are allowed to visit him.
Other visitors have to be cleared by the embassy before visiting the hospital.
The sources said Mphwiyo’s condition remains critical, but doctors are doing their best to stabilise him.
Our sources further said the budget chief has been moved from the ICU to the surgical ward following the surgery.
They said other operations were pending on his jaw structure and some areas.
“He was shot twice in the face which destroyed his jaw. After the operation, his face swelled and the face remains one area doctors are concentrating on. His chances of survival are very high,” said the source.
Milpark Hospital manager Andries du Plessis asked for a questionnaire to which he had not responded to as we went to press.
Malawi Embassy officials refused to comment, saying they had no authority to speak on the matter.
