Bvumbwe on Evirom’s heels

Bvumbwe Research has emerged as the early stumbling block to Evirom’s aspirations for an early return into the top-flight Super League.

Evirom still lead the Southern Region Football League (SRFL) Premier Division with 26 points from 10 games, but Bvumbwe who also had a stint in the country’s national premier league a few years ago, are breathing down their necks with 25 points from 11 games. Cobbe are third on 19 points from 10 games.

At the weekend, Evirom beat Poly 2-0 through goals from Carls Zgambo and Gerald Gutsu while Bvumbwe thumped Kabula United 4-0. Cobbe lost their third successive league match 2-1 to Prison United.

However, despite the good run, Evirom’s coach Aubrey Nankhuni said it is too early to start forecasting.

“There is still a long way to go and with the way the league is running, you cannot afford to be in the comfort zone,” said Nankhuni.

Bvumbwe’s coach Bob Mpinganjira also predicted a tough race, saying: “At the rate we are going, any of the top 10 teams can still win it.”

FC Surestream who earned promotion after winning the Division One championship, were the only team that won both games at the weekend against BNC Produsak (1-0) and Nyasa United (3-0).

They are currently on seventh position with 15 points from seven games having won five and lost two and their technical director Peter Mponda was a model of modesty insisting the current season will be a learning experience.

“We will be expecting too much to even think that we can fight for the championship in only our maiden season. For us this season is about learning the ropes,” said Mponda.

Chanco anchor the table with a point from five games, Ndirande Icons are second from the bottom with four points from nine games while BNC are a step above them with 10 points from five games.

Cobbe’s Isaac Vizyalona and Bvumbwe’s Mayeso Mphanje are the joint leading scorers with six goals each followed by FC Surestream’s Tony Biasi and Cobbe’s George Pahuwa who have five goals apiece.
