In an attempt to arrest the problem of intermittent water supply, Blantyre Water Board (BWB) has opened 20 kiosks in Blantyre City West under Mudi Water Users Association (WUA).

The constituency, which currently has 57 water kiosks, is one of the areas which have been hit hard by the shortage of water.

BWB director of distribution and commerce Sydney Nkhoma said this is one of the projects the water distribution company is implementing, adding that the opening up of the kiosks is good progress.

He said that the low pressure and the lack of water being experienced in some parts of the city would be resolved once production levels are increased.

“These kiosks are part of a larger project which was supposed to increase the capacity and then increase our network, but what has happened is that we have had the kiosks built when our production has not been complete yet,” said Nkhoma.

He said, for example, they have added 363 kiosks into the network and yet their production has not yet increased, but hoped that when they finish the project next year water problems will be eradicated.

Parliamentarian for the area Moses Kunkuyu said water problems are rampant because resources which could be used to develop the supply of water in urban areas are scarce.

“There has been a problem in the area that people were not able to access clean, portable water. They were drinking from unprotected sources, but today people are able to drink water which is clean. The opening of these kiosks has also brought about employment to people because we have 68 people who are now working under Mudi WUA, he said.
