Two days after resuming work, employees at Blantyre Water Board (BWB) have downed their tools again, saying their demand to have the board’s chief executive Andrew Thawe fired is taking long to be addressed.

The employees resumed work on Thursday last week after a meeting with management and government officials, two weeks after holding demonstrations to push government to address their demand.

Water Employees Trade Union of Malawi secretary general Tony Chiphwanya confirmed the strike in an interview yesterday, saying they will not resume work unless they get official communication on Thawe’s fate.

“Management and the controller of statutory corporations assured us government’s response on the issue by Friday, but they have failed to fulfil their promise,” said Chiphwanya.

The employees, through the union, have since vowed to continue with the demonstration until government decides in their favour.

Meanwhile, Comptroller of Statutory Corporations Zanga Chikhosi, who has since the day of the meeting refused to comment on the issue, will be meeting the BWB staff today.
