Official announcement of results for today’s Local Government by-elections will be made tomorrow from 1:30pm in Blantyre, Malawi Electoral Commission-Mec has said.

Voting is underway in five Wards, namely Khwawa in Karonga, Chibanja in Mzuzu, Msikisi in Mangochi, Zomba Central and Luchenza in Thyolo.

Meanwhile, Mec chairperson Maxon Mbendera has urged the electorate to come out in large numbers and vote for the candidate of their choice.

In a statement on Monday, Mbendera said the Commission has put in place procedures to facilitate easy polling for persons with disabilities, expectant mothers, the elderly, the sick, and others with special needs.

“Those with visual challenges should bring a registered voter of their choice whom they trust to assist them in polling. Alternatively only the presiding officer should assist them. No one else is allowed.

“The Commission has also provided tactile ballot template in all polling stations to help people with visual challenges who may wish to vote by themselves,” he said.

For those using a wheel chair, the ballot booth will be adjusted to their level so that they can easily mark on the ballot paper without assistance, according to Mbendera.

Polling centres opened at 6am and will close at 6 pm or when the last person on the queue before 6 pm casts his or her vote.

About 27,272 voters are expected to cast their votes in today’s by-elections
