Cabinet suppressing Declaration of Assets Bill

Balaka South MP George Nnensa (Mafunde) on Thursday claimed that Cabinet is sitting on a bill aimed at setting up the Declaration of Assets Directorate office.

The office is expected to assist the Anti-Corruption Bureau to effectively deal with public officers who will be refusing to declare their assets.

Contributing to the debate on President Joyce Banda’s opening speech of Parliament delivered last Friday, Nnensa hinted that for Malawi to move forward and develop there was need for a complete overhaul and clean up of the whole government system and machinery including enforcing the declaration of assets.

“Declaration of assets in not a matter of legality but rather morality; the bill on the Declaration of Assets Directorate was drafted long time ago, but it seems, it is stuck at Cabinet level,” he said.

Nnensa argued that Malawi is capable of progressing, but that it was the system from the top to bottom that was letting it down.

“There is need for a clean-up of the system from the top to the bottom. It is high timed government revived the bill which if enacted will assist to deal with what he called rampant corruption,” said Nnensa.
