Youth and Sports Minister Grace Chiumia confirmed the development yesterday, saying the decision was arrived at a Cabinet meeting.

She said the name for the 40 000-seater facility was given in honour of former president the late Bingu wa Mutharika who initiated the project.

“The reason was that the late president was the one who initiated this project and Cabinet felt it wise and proper to name it in his honour,” she said.

The minister said there were quite a few names that were thrown into fray such as Bingu International Stadium, but Cabinet settled for Bingu National Stadium.
