Dedza East parliamentary candidate Christopher Chaanamuna has pledged half his salary to the constituents to run various development projects.

The United Democratic Front (UDF) candidate observed that the area lags behind in development because government does not provide adequate resources for the same.

“I am touched with the growing levels of poverty in this area. Throughout the five years I will represent you in Parliament, I will give you half of my salary,” he said.

Chaanamuna made the remarks in Dedza on Saturday during a public debate National Initiative for Civic Education (Nice) Trust conducted to enable parliamentary and local government candidates sell their manifestos.

During the debate, the voters asked Malawi Congress Party (MCP) candidate Juliana Lunguzi to explain how she used the Constituency Development Fund.

She told them to check with the office of the District Commissioner to see for themselves how the fund was used.

UTM Party candidate Samson Chimangeni Khamalatha observed that voting on party lines has cost the constituents the opportunity to transform their area.

Dedza district Nice Trust civic education officer Patrick Siwinda thanked party supporters for maintaining peace during the debate.
