Caps United in financial woes

Zimbabwean club Caps United—home to three Malawian players George Nyirenda, Gerald Phiri Jnr and Ishmael Thindwa— are reportedly battling a severe cash squeeze that led to failure to pay its players for the past two months.

One of Zimbabwe’s leading dailies, Newsday, reported that the players were planning to stage a boycott because they were yet to get salaries for July and August and game bonuses.

But while confirming the financial woes, Nyirenda said the issue has since been sorted out.

He said they got their dues on Friday before travelling to Bulawayo from Harare for their Chibuku Super Cup quarter-final match against FC Platinum, which Caps lost 1-0 on Saturday. Nyirenda and Phiri played a full game while Thindwa was not in the squad.

Nyirenda, who has become one of the team’s key defenders, was responding to a question of whether the situation had affected them.

“The reports are true, but they have paid us today. I think the problem is that the owner of the club [Twine Phiri] is also chairperson of the Premier Soccer League, so he is ever busy and it takes a bit of time for us to get paid. It is more of administrative hiccup,” said Nyirenda.

Phiri reportedly admitted that he owes his players money.

“We owe them, but that cannot be a reason to boycott training and games, we will still pay them. We don’t have the money at the moment, but in the end, they will receive it. “That issue should not stop the team from winning the championship or cup matches they are still involved in,” Phiri is quoted as saying.
