However, similar events had some patrons complaining of thefts and robberies and immoral behaviour among other challenges.

“To ensure security for consumers, we will work hand in hand with Malawi Police Service and other private companies who will provide security services on the day.

“We also prioritise health and safety as such, we will have paramedics present and portable toilets for sanitation.

“Furthermore, we will have plastic cups to be used by consumers for all beverages to ward against incidents relating to broken glass. We want consumers to enjoy the party in a safe and secure environment,” explained Twikale Chirwa, Carlsberg Malawi Limited senior brands manager.

He also said alcoholic products will only be sold to patrons above the age of 18.

The street party, according to Carlsberg, has been organised to celebrate 50 years of independence.

Said Chirwa: “Carlsberg Street Party in Lilongwe will be the mother of all parties. Carlsberg 50 Street Party celebrates landmark initiatives such as Carlsberg’s launch of Malawi National Team sponsorship, the launch of the Limited Edition label for the national celebrations as well as Malawi’s talent in traditional, local and urban music.”

Carlsberg Limited Edition label, created to celebrate Malawi’s 50 years of independence, will be available in all beer selling outlets across the country only between July and August.

The street party in Lilongwe follows the New Year’s Street Party in Blantyre.

Black Missionaries and Anthony Makondetsa, Lucius Banda, Skeffa Chimoto, Lulu, Mizu Band and Gwamba will perform throughout the night.

Meanwhile, the Carlsberg Chill DJs grand finale will be one of the highlights at the Street Party, where the 2014 edition winner will be crowned.

Six DJs, Patrix and Maya from Lilongwe, Mzuzu’s Earn the DJ and Mwini as well as Crystal and Trick from Blantyre will battle it out for the two big prize.

The top prize is an all expenses paid up trip to South Africa with a master class DJ Oskido and a K600 000 (US$1 446) cash prize.
